Certified Humane and Animal Compassionate

Humane certification is not done by government agencies. There are several private programs that do this, usually linked to an animal welfare organization. A “certified humane” or similar label on meat, poultry, eggs, or dairy products is an animalwelfare label, offering no food-safety guarantees. It simply means that farmers, producers, and processors made sure the animals were well treated in terms of such issues as food and water, space, shelter, and handling. At times, a similar certification also covers humane slaughtering procedures and forbids hormone use. (See figure 7, the Certified Humane label awarded by Humane Animal Farm Care, a national nonprofit organization.) There are differences of opinion as to whether the “humane” label has anything to do with safety. Some dismiss it as mainly a marketing strategy, whereas others argue that humane treatment also translates into a better-tasting and safer product. How much this is wishful thinking is difficult to say.
